Favorite place to eat in Detroit: The Bee Sting pizza from Mootz! Absolute heaven. Favorite study spot: Cannelle in downtown Detroit. French pastries and coffee make studying a whole lot easier :) Favorite volunteer experience: The real highlight of my medical school career is dressing up in an inflatable koala costume and handing out treats to the kids at Children’s Hospital on Halloween. This will be hard to top! Best med school memory: Repurposing the previously mentioned inflatable koala costume and rolling up to the Bookies Halloween party with my inflatable koala friends during M2. We took up a lot of space in that bar. Advice to my M1 self: Give yourself grace! You are a student and will make mistakes, regardless of how much you study. It’s how you learn from them that truly matters and will set you up for success when you face the same problem again. What impact do you hope to have on the Wayne State/ Detroit community: Through my work with Aesculapians, I hope to help our community feel seen and valued. Our Detroit neighbors represent the life and strength of the city, a fact sometimes unfortunately lost in the discussion of “revitalizing” the area. It is their passion that gives Detroit its vibrancy, and I am committed to continuing my service as Aesculapians Co-President so that every resident experiences the respect and compassion they deserve. |

Favorite place to eat in Detroit: Rocco’s Italian Deli! Can’t go wrong with anything on their menu and their tiramisu is 10/10 Favorite study spot: Kitab Cafe (open till 9pm, so many charging outlets, and their brown sugar oat draft is supreme) Favorite volunteer experience: Leading street runs and helping with the Henry Ford consult system for Street Medicine Detroit! Plus being a part of Aesculapians, of course :) Best med school memory: Dressing up with five of my best friends as a 6 pack of Corona for the 2023 school Halloween party (and taking home the group costume prize). The six of us showed up to Bookie’s inside of a 6x9 cardboard box and kept it on us for most of the night as we danced and walked around the crowded bar. Advice to my M1 self: Start exploring specialties and making connections with faculty early on in medical school! Having those lasting relationships and insights really pays off later on when you’re looking for research projects and starting to prepare for residency applications. What impact do you hope to have on the Wayne State/ Detroit community: I hope to get our students more rooted in the community we serve and to find ways to support and amplify the missions of the many passionate, proud organizations that are doing amazing work within Detroit. As Detroit continues to grow and flourish, I want to invest in the preservation of the city’s unique voice and culture. |

Medical school is harder if you keep telling yourself “it’s hard”. Speak positively and get the job done. Don’t let your fears get in the way and remember God is with you. What impact do you hope to have on the Wayne State/ Detroit community: Improve care for the homeless community and give them a wide range of care in all aspects of their lives. |

Favorite place to eat in Detroit: L George’s Coney Island Favorite study spot: Local Library or Scott Hall cafeteria Favorite volunteer experience: Auntie Na’s Cleanup Day with BMA - I got to bring one of my nieces with me and spend time with peers doing something positive for a city that I love and care for deeply. Best med school memory: Getting a text from one of my medical school peers, where they had taken a photo of the wall on the 3rd floor of Mazurek and me being shocked to see that it was large photo of my face on the wall. I felt extremely honored and grateful to be on the wall at school and a few months ago I was able to bring one of my nieces to campus and show her the photo and take photos in front of it, etc. Seeing her facial expression was priceless and is something I will always remember. Advice to my M1 self: You are capable of doing hard things. Where you currently are is a prayer answered, so whenever you get overwhelmed or discouraged, remember that this phase won’t last forever, and it will get better. What impact do you hope to have on the Wayne State/ Detroit community: To be a positive example of authentic and unapologetic compassion, love and kindness in a setting that can often feel overwhelming, I want to always remember that love and support can be more powerful than any score or accolade. |

Favorite place to eat in Detroit: Farmer Franks breakfast. 11/10. Favorite study spot: My bed (I know this is bad, sue me) Favorite volunteer experience: The Medical Student Garden!!! Best med school memory: Being part of a viral lampoon video. Advice to my M1 self: Stop worrying that everyone around you is smarter than you, they are, but you’ll be just fine. What impact do you hope to have on the Wayne State/ Detroit community: I hope to leave an impact through the small things I’ve done. The friendly conversation with a patient in the clinic that makes them feel comfortable to open up about a health concern, the event I planned that took a classmate’s mind off stress and studying for an hour, the little piece of advice passed along to an underclassman that made their life easier, or the vegetable that I planted at MSG sitting on a family’s dinner table. Hoping these all add up to something! |

Favorite place to eat in Detroit: Central Kitchen!! Favorite study spot: Home Favorite volunteer experience: Annual family volunteering events or Street Medicine Detroit Best med school memory: BMA Boat Cruise or passing HBF-3 lol Advice to my M1 self: Just relax and be wherever your feet are. Don’t worry about yesterday, or what you have to do in the near future. Be in the moment, enjoy the social connection, and lean on your support system. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. But remember, everything is going to be okay, even when it doesn’t look like it. What impact do you hope to have on the Wayne State/ Detroit community: I hope to have a robust connection with the people of Detroit—understand their stories and how the city has made an impact on them just as it has on me. Even if it’s a small interaction with a modicum of people, I hope they remember the interaction—of how much I cared and not necessarily how much I knew, academically. Lastly, I hope to inspire and invigorate passion in the younger generations who dream of being health professionals one day. |
